Discussion

This spit was excavated to define the features in the southern central part of area 12AD. Some remnant "lumps" were first shovelled, and then the whole area was trowelled back. Numerous ditches, pits and other features werer defined. The material removed was a medium sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 4/3) with 5-10% chalk inclusions. Unusually, a high ratio of animal bones to objects was found (although this is mirrored in spit 012AD08648 just to the east). However, the distribution of the finds is not even. The majority of the animal bones are found to the north of ditch 012AD09136, in a square area, with a cluster of objects (mainly later Roman pottery) found to the south of the ditch. Also found were two late Roman coins (an illegible AD 260-378 and a 341/346 follis of Constantine I).
